Tom Thomson Sketch Goes for Nearly $2million

Published May 27th, 2008

An oil sketch by Tom Thomson has sold for $1,957,500, including buyer’s premium, at a Sotheby’s auction.

“Pine Trees at Sunset,” depicts the silhouettes of three trees set against a blazing sunset.

Thomson was one of the first painters to focus on the Canadian landscape, favouring northern Ontario’s Algonquin Park with a style that would heavily influence the work of the Group of Seven.

In 1917 at age 39, he drowned under mysterious circumstances in Algonquin Park, leaving behind about 50 canvases and more than 300 sketches.
